Work Characteristics
Food service managers make sure that the daily operations of food and beverage establishments or restaurants are carried out efficiently. They ensure proper coordination between different departments such as dining rooms, kitchen and banquet halls as well as making sure that the customers are satisfied with the service they receive. They also arrange for routine upkeep and maintenance of restaurants, their supplies, facilities and their equipment. They are also responsible for recruiting new staff, monitoring their performance and ensuring that the administrative functions of the restaurant are carried out properly.
The different categories in this profession are that of a general manager who takes care of the overall functions of a restaurant, assistant managers, mostly required in big setups, generally ensure that all food services are carried out properly and an executive chef who ensures proper function of food preparation activities, takes decisions regarding the planning of menus, supervises kitchen operations and maintains quality standards.
Work environment
Long hours that start early in the morning and end late at night are common features of this profession. Managers may work as many as 12 to 15 hours a day during holiday or other seasonal periods. Weekends, nights, and holidays are working days. Those involved in administrative services work during regular hours.
Education Requirements
Prior food service experience is helpful. In addition a 2-4 years degree from a college that offers hospitality management is preferred by employers. Several top universities and colleges provide hospitality management courses. In fact, it is possible to earn an online bachelor degree in hotel and restaurant management. Accredited colleges and career training schools also offer online restaurant management courses. that may be completed at your own pace.
Job Outlook and Salary Expectations
Growth in opportunities in this career is expected to be at par with most other professions. Those with work experience and the proper degree stand to benefit.
Salary starts as low as less than $24,500 annually and goes up as high as more than $68,860.
