Categories of Hotel Management
General Managers perform duties that concern with the overall working of the hotel.
Hotel or resident managers assist the general manager and take care of the hotels day to day affairs.
Assistant managers run the everyday operations of a hotel.
An executive committee comprising the senior managers of a hotel gives advice to the general manager, help in defining hotel policy, coordinating cross department services and collaborate efforts to make sure that there is efficiency and consistency in guest service in all parts of the hotel.
Executive housekeepers have the responsibility of ensuring that banquet and meeting rooms, guest rooms and public areas are orderly, clean and well maintained.
Front office managers take care of room assignments and reservations, training and direction of front desk staff.
Convention services managers ensure coordination between various departments of the hotel in order to accommodate, conventions, meetings and special event.
Food and beverage managers supervise all the food service operations of the hotel.
Catering managers make sure that the food services in convention and meeting rooms are proper.
Marketing or sales directors along with public relations directors supervise the promotion of and advertising of the hotel functions and operations, including dining and lodging specials and events such as seasonal and holiday specials.
Human resource directors take care of the personnel functions in a hotel, making sure that all payroll, accounting and matters of employee relations are carried out in compliance with the policy of the hotel and applicable laws.
Finance directors oversee reservations and room sales, cash flow matters and accounting.
Work Environment.
Working hours are long including weekends and late nights. Most managers work over 40 hours a week.
Educational Requirements
A bachelor's degree and sometimes a master's degree in hotel management are required to step into this profession. Experience of working in restaurants full time or part time is preferred by employers.
Job Prospects and Salary
Growth in this profession is predicted to be at pace with other professions.
The salary starts at $23,000 annually and goes up to more than $72,160 annually.
