Work Characteristics

All editors and writers fall into one of the following categories; those who conceive original nonfiction and fiction for magazines, books, trade journals, newspapers, online publications, Television/Radio broadcasts, advertisements, company newsletters or motion pictures.

Editors fulfill the role of selecting and reviewing content written by other writers for dissemination or publication. Writers on the other hand create content on technical or non technical subjects.

They both should be comfortable in using technology. Laptops, scanners, printers and other related equipment are necessary to operate in the field of writing and editing. Therefore an operational knowledge of these equipments is a must. A familiarity with different publication software is also required.

Writers - non fiction writers especially - need to maintain their credibility with readers and editors by putting in the necessary research into each project. Using facilities like public libraries, internet, interviews and personal observation the writers must execute their writings with a comprehensive understanding of their subject.

Editors rewrite, review and edit the work of writers. They sometimes write original material as well. An editor’s job profile may consist of content planning, research into the demand of readers, editing and reviewing drafts of articles and books and giving points for improvement.

Work Environment

Different working conditions prevail. Some have the regular office jobs where one is surrounded by people while others work from private spaces. Freelance writers have the opportunity of working in flexible time periods. However, freelance practitioners can find themselves working days and nights in crunch situations.

Educational Requirements

Usually to find jobs as a writer or an editor one needs a degree or Career Diploma in journalism, communication or English. Many technical schools and colleges offer freelance writing courses. A wide general knowledge of various mediums such as science, entertainment, sports, fashion etc is also very useful.

Job Prospects and Salary Expectations

Job opportunities are ample and expected to grow. Mostly there will be requirement for online writers and editors.

Median annual earnings for salaried editors were $46,990 in May 2006. The middle 50 percent earned between $35,250 and $64,140. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $27,340, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $87,400. Median annual earnings of those working for newspaper, periodical, book, and directory publishers were $45,970.

Median annual earnings for salaried technical writers were $58,050 in May 2006. The middle 50 percent earned between $45,130 and $73,750. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $35,520, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $91,720. Median annual earnings in computer systems design and related services were $59,830.

According to the Society for Technical Communication, the median annual salary for entry level technical writers was $40,400 in 2005. The median annual salary for midlevel nonsupervisory technical writers was $52,140, and for senior nonsupervisory technical writers, $69,000.
